The Seer That Sees

the practice

the panel

what it is

What do I see when I stop looking?

its phraseYou stopped looking and the seeing arrived on its own.
where it sitsBehind the forehead — not on the surface, slightly inside, in the space where the brain sits directly behind the brow ridge
the panel’s promiseI still the looking. What was always seen shows itself.

the pair

Manipura. Will and seeing — the two movements of clarity. Manipura builds toward clarity through action: it forges, decides, acts. Ajna moves toward clarity through perception: it sees without trying, receives without reaching. Both are the same consciousness at work — one through the body’s fire, one through the mind’s eye.

the reflection

I have stopped looking. The seeing has not stopped. It will not stop. The seeing was never something I was doing. The seeing was something I was inside of, the whole time, while I thought I was doing it. The recognition has changed nothing about the world. Everything I see is what I would have seen if I had stopped looking earlier. The recognition has changed only what I think I am.

I am not the one seeing. I am one of the seen things. Inside the seeing, with everything else.

This is — I don't have a word for what this is. Peace is too small. Surrender is too active. It is the absence of the question I have been asking the whole time, which was: am I doing this right? The question was constructed by the looking-hard. The looking-hard has stopped. The question has nothing to attach to. The question is gone.

What remains, when the question is gone, is the seeing. The seeing has been here. It will continue. I am one of its specifics.

There is one more thing. I can feel it at the edge of the seeing. I cannot make it out. I do not need to make it out. Whatever it is will arrive when I am still enough. The next register is not a thing I do. The next register is what arrives when I have run out of doings.

I'm about to receive something.
