The Open Door
the practice
Your nose. Where air becomes life the moment it crosses the threshold of your body.
what it is
What does the breath know that the mind doesn't?
the pair
Svadhisthana. The sacral flow and the nasal flow. One moves desire through the body. The other moves air. Both are currents. Both flow through openings. Both connect inside to outside. You follow desire. You follow the breath. Same intelligence, different expression.
the reflection
I am a body that knows about the door. Before, I was a body that breathed without noticing. Now I am a body that has noticed. The noticing is what I get to keep. I cannot un-know the door. Even when I forget for hours — and I will forget — the door will still be there when I remember.
I am going to forget. I know that now. The body cannot keep this kind of attention. The breath will return to running itself, without me, the way it always has. That is fine. The breath does not require my attention to function. The breath has been functioning my whole life without it.
What I get to keep is the return. I can come back to the door any time. The door does not move. The door does not close because I forgot. The door is the cheapest practice I will ever have. Free. Always available. Already operating.
The breath has not stopped while I have been thinking about it.
Something at the ends of my arms has become warm.
