Clean Pain and Dirty Pain

A skill

The skill
Clean pain is what a hard moment costs — the ache of a loss, the sting of a mistake. Dirty pain is what gets added on top: the story that it shouldn’t be happening, that you shouldn’t feel this, that something’s wrong with you.
What is happening
Clean pain shows up, does its work, and tends to move through. Dirty pain is what keeps it circling — arguing with the moment instead of feeling it, judging the feeling instead of letting it pass. Most suffering isn’t the original pain. It’s the layer stacked on top of it.

1 of 3
Clean pain is what the moment costs.
Because a loss or a hard truth carries some pain on its own, cleanly.
The ache of a friendship ending — present, real, and easing with time.
2 of 3
Dirty pain is the story on top.
Because arguing that it shouldn’t be happening adds a second round of suffering.
“This is unbearable, I can’t believe this is happening” — layered onto the ache already there.
3 of 3
Clean pain doesn’t need the extra story.
Because the story is optional even when the pain itself isn’t.
Letting the sadness be sad, without also insisting it shouldn’t exist.
The practice
Name one thing that’s genuinely hurt you lately. Split it into two lines: what the moment itself cost, and what you’ve added on top — the shouldn’t, the story. Notice which one is doing more of the damage.
Some of the pain is the moment. Some is the argument about it.

This is a teaching, not treatment. If you’re struggling, a doctor or therapist can help. If you’re in danger right now, call your local emergency number or a crisis line (in the US, call or text 988).
