The Big Picture

A skill

The skill
The big picture is the direction underneath your goals — not what you’re trying to achieve this month, but what all of it is pointing toward. A goal finishes or fails. A direction like honesty, connection, or growth doesn’t; it’s still there either way.
What is happening
A goal fills the whole view while you’re chasing it — get it, and there’s already a new one; miss it, and it can feel like the whole picture collapsed. Stepping back to ask what direction the goal was serving keeps one result from standing in for everything.
The move
you
I need to get this promotion.
Nothing you type is stored or sent anywhere.
1 of 3
A goal ends. A direction doesn’t.
Because a goal is a finish line, and a direction keeps going past it.
The promotion lands, and a week later there’s already a new target in view.
2 of 3
Ask what the goal is actually for.
Because most goals are stand-ins for something bigger, like connection, freedom, or being seen.
The promotion might really be chasing ‘I want to matter here,’ not the title itself.
3 of 3
The picture is bigger than any one week.
Because a single win or loss can’t hold the whole direction of a life.
One bad quarter doesn’t undo years of walking toward the same thing.
The practice
Pick a goal you’re currently chasing. Ask what it’s actually in service of — what bigger direction it points toward. Write that direction down somewhere you’ll see it after the goal is decided, either way.
The goal will resolve. The direction keeps going.

This is a teaching, not treatment. If you’re struggling, a doctor or therapist can help. If you’re in danger right now, call your local emergency number or a crisis line (in the US, call or text 988).
