Mindfulness for Beginners

A skill

The skill
Mindfulness is paying attention to what’s actually happening right now — this breath, this sound, this feeling — without immediately sorting it into good or bad. It’s not about clearing the mind. It’s about noticing what’s already there.
What is happening
The mind usually runs a step ahead or a step behind — replaying what happened, rehearsing what’s next, judging whatever shows up along the way. Mindfulness interrupts that by bringing attention back to what’s here right now, and letting it be here without a verdict attached.

This is boring.
Nothing you type is stored or sent anywhere.
1 of 3
Attention goes to what’s here now.
Because most attention runs on replaying the past or rehearsing what’s next.
Actually tasting the coffee, instead of drinking it while thinking about the meeting after.
2 of 3
Noticing doesn’t require a verdict.
Because naming something good or bad is a second step mindfulness doesn’t need.
The room is loud. Just loud — not ‘this is unbearable,’ just loud.
3 of 3
The mind wanders. That’s not failing.
Because attention drifting off is normal, and noticing the drift is the actual practice.
Catching yourself three sentences into a daydream, and just coming back, no scolding.
The practice
Pick one minute. Notice five things you can hear, without deciding if any of them are good or annoying. Just sound arriving, then leaving. When your mind wanders off, just come back.
You don’t have to like this moment. Just be in it.

This is a teaching, not treatment. If you’re struggling, a doctor or therapist can help. If you’re in danger right now, call your local emergency number or a crisis line (in the US, call or text 988).
