Grounding Through the Body

A skill

The skill
Grounding is bringing attention back to right now, through the senses and the body — what you can see, hear, feel underfoot — when your mind has gone somewhere else entirely: a memory, a spiral, a future that hasn’t happened yet.
What is happening
Ungrounded, attention is somewhere else — replaying, predicting, anywhere but here. Grounding works through the senses because they only report the present: this chair, this sound, this breath. Coming back through the body tends to be faster than trying to think your way back to now.
The move
you
I feel like I’m not really here.
Nothing you type is stored or sent anywhere.
1 of 3
Use the senses, not the story.
Because the senses only report what’s happening now; the mind can report anywhere.
Naming five things you can see, rather than thinking your way back to calm.
2 of 3
The body counts as a sense too.
Because feet on the floor, weight in a chair, are as groundable as sight or sound.
Pressing feet into the floor and noticing the actual contact, not just picturing it.
3 of 3
Grounding meets the moment; it doesn’t erase it.
Because coming back to now doesn’t resolve whatever sent attention elsewhere in the first place.
Steadier for the next five minutes, with the actual worry still waiting after.
The practice
Name five things you can see, four you can hear, three you can feel touching your body right now. Go slowly. It’s not a test to pass — it’s a way back to the room you’re actually in.
Grounding doesn’t solve it. It just brings you back to where it is.

This is a teaching, not treatment. If you’re struggling, a doctor or therapist can help. If you’re in danger right now, call your local emergency number or a crisis line (in the US, call or text 988).
