Grounding the Body

A practice card

Not calming down. Grounding is the specific move of using body senses — touch, weight, temperature — to reconnect with where you actually are, when a moment starts to feel unreal or far away.

When
When a moment feels distant, foggy, or unreal, rather than simply tense or fast — that's a different problem than anxiety alone.
What's actually happening
Feeling unreal or far from the present is a different state than being wound up, and it tends to respond better to input from the senses than to calming the breath alone. Something firmly felt — cold water, textured fabric, weight against the body — gives the mind concrete, present evidence to orient to, which is harder to get from thought alone.
What to change
Press your feet flat on the floor and notice the actual contact, the texture, the pressure.
Pick up an object nearby and describe its texture, weight, and temperature to yourself in detail.
Look around and name five things you can actually see, out loud or silently, one at a time.
Hold your hands under cool running water for a moment and notice the sensation directly.
State out loud the actual place, day, and time, plainly, as a fact rather than a feeling.

Pick one
Five at once is how these lists fail. Tap a number — the ones up and to the left give the most for the least.
What to expect
None of these erase what triggered the disconnection — they're a way back to the room, tried one at a time. Pick one and use it on purpose for two weeks, in ordinary moments too, so it's familiar before you need it.
choose one, and the fortnight starts
