The dances

One song, one word from you

In one sentence
A dance is a single web page built around one song: you type one word before it starts, and the page moves with the music while your word comes back to you in new shapes.
A Tuesday
Headphones on. The page asks for one word. You type 'enough'. The song starts and the screen begins to move — not a video, a living pattern tuned to the music — and every so often your word surfaces, changed. Four minutes later you take the headphones off and the word means more than when you typed it.
Why I made it
Some things can't be read into a body. They have to be moved into it. I wanted a way to give someone a song and have the song give them something back. The word is theirs; the music does the rest.
What's inside
Nine dances belong to the body's centres; the rest to songs that asked for one.
Under every song there's a low tone you can't quite hear, tuned to the song itself, that moves your attention slowly from busy to still.
Each dance has its own visual world. None of them borrow from each other.
What it refuses to do
It won't start any sound until you touch it.
It won't rush the song.
If you want to try it
Pick a word that sounds like your day. Headphones matter — without them the low tone disappears.
