Almost every system answers a lapse with a penalty. In one Sikh code of conduct, the answer is a shift in the kitchen.
Why this is hard
The penance for a minor lapse is work: washing dishes, cleaning shoes, serving in the langar — the free kitchen every gurdwara keeps, where anyone may sit and eat.

The repair is service.
Because a fine settles a debt and leaves the person where they were.
Something useful and unglamorous, done for a while, without fuss.

Everyone sits in the same row.
Because the code says all human beings, high or low, may sit and eat in the langar.
Nobody is seated by rank, including the one repairing something.

A lapse becomes a doorway back in.
Because the point of the arrangement is the return, not the mark.
It is not mentioned again.
The practice
Next time you let someone down, ask what would actually help them rather than what would settle you. Do that, and don't narrate it.
The word is tankhah. The penance it names is service.
