Catholic teaching ties an individual, God-given soul to a living human body. Some Buddhist teachers argue nearly the reverse: nothing has a fixed soul, and awareness is only ever a pattern conditions produce.

The question

In January 2025, the Vatican's Antiqua et Nova stated that AI, however capable, is not a substitute for the human mind or soul. Some Buddhist teachers take almost the reverse position: Buddhism denies that any being has a fixed soul, so awareness is a pattern conditions produce — open, in principle, wherever those conditions are met.

Round 1
