Inuit Cosmology: Sila

Sila and Sedna · a storybook in 5 pages

Sila, the aware force in weather and breath, and Sedna, mistress of the sea animals — as Inuit elders across the Arctic tell it.

Sila

Weather that is aware.

As Inuit tradition holds it, Sila is not just weather but an intelligence running through wind, breath, and thought together — present everywhere, answering to how people live, rather than a god to be worshipped.

Answering to it

Careless living stirs storms.

One elder, recorded in the 1920s, described Sila answering carelessness with storms and the sea's fury, and calm living with calm weather. Other tellers put it differently — the relationship, not the wording, is what holds across accounts.

Sedna

Mother of the sea.

Many tellings across the Arctic speak of a woman — called Sedna, Nuliajuk, or other names by region — who was cast into the sea and became mistress of its animals. The seals and whales hunters depend on are held to be hers to give.

The angakkuq

One who can reach her.

An angakkuq, a shaman or spiritual specialist, is held able to travel to Sedna's home beneath the sea, to comb her tangled hair and calm her anger when animals grow scarce, restoring the balance between people and the sea.

Many tellings

Not one Arctic story.

Sila and Sedna are told differently region to region, community to community, across the wide span of Inuit homelands from Alaska to Greenland. Inuit writers today still describe Sila as central to how the world is understood — one living tradition, many voices.

Before you go
If you want to talk about this with someone:
  • What would change if you treated weather as aware of you?
  • Who or what do you owe balance to, whether they watch or not?
  • What is lost when many tellings are flattened into one story?
Where this comes from
As Inuit elders and writers (Najagneq via Knud Rasmussen, Rachel Qitsualik) describe it, and as Jarich Oosten's research records; tellings vary by region, this is not the only one.
