Anapana: Breath at the Nostrils

A practice card

A beginner’s taste of anapana, the breath awareness that opens S. N. Goenka’s Vipassana courses — noticing breath exactly where it touches your nostrils.

When
When you want one small, steady place to return your attention to, before anything more.
How
Bring your attention to the small area under your nose, where breath touches skin on its way in and out. Don’t control the breath — just feel it: cool going in, warmer coming out, sometimes stronger through one side. When a thought pulls you away, notice it, and come back to that same small spot.
Try it
Nothing you type is kept. It floats off the page.
The full method
This is a beginner’s taste. The complete technique is taught only on a 10-day residential course in the Goenka tradition. Those courses are offered free, run entirely on voluntary donations from past students.
Breath by breath, you are already here.
Nothing here needs believing — only noticing, one small patch of skin at a time.
