The Brain Dump

A practice card

Writing down everything running through your head, unedited and unsorted, so it's out of your head rather than circling inside it.

When
When too many thoughts are running at once, and none of them will hold still long enough to think through.
What's actually happening
A mind holding several unfinished threads tends to keep replaying them, as if afraid of losing them. Putting them on paper, however messily, seems to ease that replay — the page holds them so the mind doesn't have to. What's written doesn't need to be true, fair, or organized, only out.
What to change
Give yourself a fixed few minutes and write without stopping until it ends.
Don't fix spelling, sentences, or order — write it exactly as it arrives.
Use pen and paper instead of a screen, if that's available to you right now.
Once the timer ends, close the page without reading back over what you wrote.
If it helps, get rid of the page once you're done, rather than keeping it.

Pick one
Five at once is how these lists fail. Tap a number — the ones up and to the left give the most for the least.
What to expect
This won't organize a problem or solve it — that's a separate step, for later, if it's even needed. Pick one version and use it for two weeks whenever your head feels too full.
choose one, and the fortnight starts
