Cognitive Dissonance

A practice card

Not confusion. Cognitive dissonance is the discomfort of holding two things that don't fit together — a belief and an action, or two beliefs — and the mind's pull to resolve it fast.

When
When a belief and an action clearly don't match, and the discomfort of that gap pushes toward a quick explanation.
What's actually happening
Holding two conflicting things at once is uncomfortable enough that the mind tends to resolve it quickly, often by changing the belief to match the action rather than changing the harder-to-move action itself. That's why someone who acts against a value will often revise the value's importance instead of changing what they do — the mismatch gets fixed on whichever side moves easier.
What to change
Notice the specific discomfort of a belief and an action not matching, before rushing to explain it away.
Say plainly what the belief is and what the action was, without blending them into one story yet.
Pause before revising the belief to match the action, and ask which side actually deserves to change.
Where the action is the problem, change the action, rather than talking yourself into a smaller belief.
Remember the urge to resolve the mismatch fast is automatic, not a sign you've reasoned it through.

Pick one
Five at once is how these lists fail. Tap a number — the ones up and to the left give the most for the least.
What to expect
This discomfort resolves itself quickly by default, usually by shrinking the belief rather than the action. Pick one mismatch you're aware of and, for two weeks, hold the discomfort a moment longer before deciding which side should actually move.
