Willingness as a Skill

A practice card

Not the same as wanting something, and not giving up. Willingness means letting an unwanted feeling be present, without fighting it, while still doing what matters.

When
When avoiding a feeling has cost more than the feeling itself would have, or an unwanted feeling is blocking something that matters.
What's actually happening
Fighting an unwanted feeling, pushing it away, arguing with it, tends to use up energy and can make the feeling louder rather than smaller. Willingness is different from wanting: it means letting the feeling stay while still acting, rather than waiting for it to leave first. It's called a skill because it can be practiced deliberately, in small doses, rather than something a person simply has or lacks.
What to change
Notice when you're actively pushing a feeling away, and see what that pushing is costing you.
Let an unwanted feeling stay for a short, set stretch of time without acting to remove it.
Do the next needed thing while the feeling is still present, rather than waiting for it to pass first.
Aim to stop struggling against the feeling, not to make the feeling disappear — those are different goals.
Practice on a mild unwanted feeling first, not the largest one, and build willingness from there.

Pick one
Five at once is how these lists fail. Tap a number — the ones up and to the left give the most for the least.
What to expect
Willingness tends to grow through repeated small practice, not from deciding once to have it. Pick one mild unwanted feeling and practice staying with it, without fighting it, for two weeks before judging whether it's gotten easier.
