The Function of Emotions

A practice card

Not a malfunction. Emotions are a signal system — each one carries information about what's happening and a nudge toward a particular kind of action.

When
When a feeling gets treated as a problem to eliminate, rather than as information worth reading first.
What's actually happening
Fear points attention toward a threat and readies the body to move away from it. Anger points toward something blocking a goal and readies a push against it. Sadness tends to follow loss and prompts a slower pace. Read this way, an emotion is less a problem than a message with a suggested next move, one worth checking rather than automatically obeying.
What to change
Before trying to fix or dismiss the feeling, ask what message or action it seems to be pointing toward.
Notice the specific urge that comes with the feeling — to move away, to push back, to slow down.
Ask whether the message actually fits the current situation, or whether it's responding to something older.
Decide on purpose whether to follow the urge, adjust it, or set it aside, rather than reacting automatically.
Stop treating the feeling itself as the enemy — the goal is reading it accurately, not silencing it.

Five at once is how these lists fail. Tap a number — the ones up and to the left give the most for the least.
What to expect
Reading emotions accurately is a skill that sharpens with practice, not something settled after one attempt. Pick one feeling this week and ask what it's pointing toward before reacting, and keep at it for two weeks.
