Cognitive Defusion

A practice card

Not positive thinking. The specific skill of noticing a thought as a thought passing through, rather than treating it as fact the moment it appears.

When
When a thought like "I always mess this up" arrives and gets treated as settled truth instead of one passing sentence in the mind.
What's actually happening
A thought and a fact aren't the same thing, but the mind tends to treat them as identical the instant a thought appears. Fusing with a thought means acting as if it's simply true; defusing means noticing it's just a thought occurring, which loosens its grip without needing to argue it away or prove it wrong.
What to change
Rephrase "I'm a failure" as "I'm having the thought that I'm a failure." The extra words create distance from the content.
Treat a harsh thought like passing weather — notice it, expect it to move on. You don't have to fight or agree with weather.
Repeat a sticky thought silently in a cartoon voice a few times. It sounds odd, but it tends to weaken how convincing the thought feels.
Instead of asking if a thought is true, ask if believing it right now is useful. Not every true thought is worth acting on.
Notice a thought without arguing back or trying to fix it. Most thoughts pass faster when they're not given a debate.

Pick one
Five at once is how these lists fail. Tap a number — the ones up and to the left give the most for the least.
What to expect
This doesn't make hard thoughts stop showing up — that isn't the goal. Pick one way of putting distance between you and a thought, and use it on the sticky ones for two weeks before deciding whether they've loosened their grip.

This is a teaching, not treatment. If you’re struggling, a doctor or therapist can help. If you’re in danger right now, call your local emergency number or a crisis line (in the US, call or text 988).
