How to Change How You Think

A practice card

Not a single insight. A habitual thought pattern is worn in through repetition, and it tends to change the same way — through repeated practice, not one moment of realizing something.

When
When noticing an unhelpful thought pattern hasn't been enough on its own to make it show up any less often.
What's actually happening
A repeated thought pattern is closer to a habit than a belief — it fires quickly because it's been practiced, not because it's been reasoned through each time. Noticing the pattern is a start, but the pattern itself tends to weaken only with repeated practice of a different thought or a different response, in real moments, over time. Insight alone rarely does the whole job.
What to change
Notice the old pattern firing in a real moment, as close to when it happens as you can.
Write out the alternative thought ahead of time, in plain words, so it's ready before the old one fires.
In the actual moment, say the new thought deliberately, even if it doesn't feel true yet.
Practice the new thought outside the hard moments too, so it isn't only tried under pressure.
Expect the old pattern to keep showing up for a while even as the new one gets practiced.

roughly placed · having the new line ready helps most

Pick one
Five at once is how these lists fail. Tap a number — the ones up and to the left give the most for the least.
What to expect
This changes slowly, through repeated practice in real moments, not through understanding the pattern once. Pick one part, writing the new line ahead of time or saying it in the moment, and practice it deliberately for two weeks before judging whether the old pattern fires as fast.
