Relaxation Coping Skills

A practice card

Not something to discover mid-crisis. Relaxation techniques work better as a rehearsed skill, practiced regularly, than as something reached for cold at the peak of stress.

When
When a relaxation technique gets tried for the first time in the middle of real stress, and doesn't seem to work.
What's actually happening
A relaxation technique, slow breathing, progressive muscle release, calming imagery, works like any other skill: familiar and reliable once practiced, clumsy and unreliable the first time it's tried. Learning it during a moment of real stress asks it to do two jobs at once — being learned and working — which is a harder ask than practicing it beforehand, when nothing urgent is riding on it.
What to change
Choose a single relaxation technique to learn, rather than trying several at once and mastering none.
Run through it on an ordinary day, not just when stressed, so the body learns it outside pressure.
Set a few minutes for it on a regular basis, rather than waiting until stress makes the time.
Reach for the technique before a known stressful moment arrives, not only once it's already underway.
Treat the first several tries as practice, not a test of whether the technique actually works.

Pick one
Five at once is how these lists fail. Tap a number — the ones up and to the left give the most for the least.
What to expect
This takes practiced repetition before it's reliable under real stress — expect that gap rather than reading it as failure. Pick one technique, practice it on ordinary days, and check after two weeks whether it's starting to hold under pressure.
choose one, and the fortnight starts
