Maranasati: Mindfulness of Death

A practice card

A gentle beginner’s taste of maranasati, the Buddhist practice of remembering that death can come at any time, held to sharpen how you live.

When
When you want to feel what actually matters today, not what merely feels urgent.
How
Sit quietly and bring to mind, plainly and without drama, that this life will end — you don’t know when. Don’t reach for an answer. Just let the fact sit beside you for a few breaths, then ask what it changes about today. Let the sitting be brief; a few minutes is enough.
Try it
Nothing you type is kept. It floats off the page.
If this feels heavy
If thoughts of death feel heavy or unsafe rather than clarifying, stop the practice. Use your local emergency number or a crisis line — this page is not a substitute for real support.
Ordinary life, made vivid by its ending.
Keep it brief and plain. Then go back to the day.
