How to Process Anxiety

A practice card

Not the same as solving what worried you. Processing anxiety means checking whether the warning fits the moment, letting the physical charge move, and deciding whether action is actually needed.

When
When anxious thought keeps circling the same worry, without the physical edge of it easing or a decision ever actually getting made.
What's actually happening
Anxiety functions as a warning about something ahead, not yet arrived, and the warning can fire whether or not it fits what's actually happening. Processing it means separating three things usually tangled together: is the warning accurate, what does the body's charge need to do, and is there an action to take now or not. Skipping straight to worry tends to leave all three unresolved.
What to change
Say plainly what the anxiety is warning you about, as specifically as you can.
Ask whether the thing it's warning about is happening now, or is a future maybe.
Let the physical sensation, tight chest, restless legs, run its course without acting on it right away.
Once the charge has settled some, decide on one concrete action, or decide plainly that none is needed yet.
Once a decision is made, or made not to act, deliberately set the worry aside until something changes.

Pick one
Five at once is how these lists fail. Tap a number — the ones up and to the left give the most for the least.
What to expect
If anxiety has tipped into a crisis, or thoughts of harming yourself, call your local emergency number or a crisis line. Otherwise, pick one part of this sequence — naming the warning is the easiest start — and run it deliberately for two weeks.

This is a teaching, not treatment. If you’re struggling, a doctor or therapist can help. If you’re in danger right now, call your local emergency number or a crisis line (in the US, call or text 988).
