Making Room for Joy

A practice card

Enjoyment rarely shows up in whatever time is left over — it tends to need a deliberate slot, chosen on purpose, the way any other priority does.

When
When the week is full of obligations, and nothing in it was chosen simply because it's enjoyable.
What's actually happening
Time left after obligations tends to get used by more obligations, or by nothing in particular, rather than by enjoyment on its own. Treating something enjoyable as worth scheduling in advance, rather than as something that happens if there's time, tends to be what actually makes room for it.
What to change
Put one enjoyable thing on the calendar in advance, rather than waiting for a free moment.
Choose something that takes minutes, not hours, so it's realistic to actually do.
Treat the scheduled time the way you'd treat an appointment you can't easily move.
Choose something you enjoy for no productive reason, not because it will help with anything else.
Watch for the moment you're tempted to give it up for something else, and don't, at least once.

Pick one
Five at once is how these lists fail. Tap a number — the ones up and to the left give the most for the least.
What to expect
This won't make an overloaded week lighter — it makes room inside whatever week you've actually got. Pick one small thing, schedule it on purpose, and keep the appointment for two weeks.
choose one, and the fortnight starts
