Processing an Emotion

A practice card

Not venting, and not analyzing it away. The specific work of letting a feeling move through the body instead of staying stuck in the head.

When
When a feeling has been sitting for hours or days, and thinking about it more hasn't moved it anywhere.
What's actually happening
An emotion is a body state as much as a thought — a pattern of sensation that rises, peaks, and passes on its own if it's allowed to. Staying in the head, arguing with it or explaining it away, tends to hold it in place instead. Naming it and feeling where it sits physically lets that pattern finish.
What to change
Put one word on it — not the story, just the feeling itself. A vague, wordless ache is harder to let go of than a named one.
Notice where the feeling sits physically — chest, throat, stomach — before doing anything about it. This is usually skipped.
Stay with the sensation for a few minutes without acting on it or explaining it. A feeling left alone usually crests and eases on its own.
Delay working out whose fault it is or what it means until the feeling itself has settled. The story can wait; it usually changes anyway.
If sitting with it isn't working, shake out your hands, walk, or press your feet into the floor. Motion can finish what stillness stalled.

Pick one
Five at once is how these lists fail. Tap a number — the ones up and to the left give the most for the least.
What to expect
This isn't a one-time fix for a single feeling — it's a way of meeting whatever comes up next. Pick one part of it, the naming or the staying with the sensation, and use it on purpose for two weeks before deciding if it changes how stuck things feel.
choose one, and the fortnight starts
