Locus of Control, in More Depth

A practice card

Not a fixed personality type. Locus of control is how much a person expects their own actions, versus outside forces, to shape what happens to them — and it can shift by situation.

When
When 'internal' or 'external' locus of control gets used as a label for a whole person, instead of a pattern that varies by area of life.
What's actually happening
Most people lean internal in some areas of life — work, say — and external in others, like health, rather than sitting at one end of a single scale. A strongly internal view can tip into blaming yourself for things outside your control; a strongly external view can tip into giving up influence you have. The useful move is checking, area by area, which is closer to true.
What to change
List a few areas of life — work, health, relationships — and rate each one separately instead of scoring yourself as one type.
When you say something is entirely outside your control, check whether that's fully true or partly a habit of thinking.
When you assume an outcome was fully down to you, check whether outside factors actually shaped it too.
Once you've found an area where you hold more real influence than you've been using, take one small action inside it.
Once you've found an area genuinely outside your influence, put the energy spent fighting it toward something you can actually shape.

Pick one
Five at once is how these lists fail. Tap a number — the ones up and to the left give the most for the least.
What to expect
This isn't about becoming more internal across the board — an accurate map of where you have influence and where you don't is the actual goal. Pick one area of life, sort what's yours to act on from what isn't, and test that sorting for two weeks before revising it.
