One Tiny Step at a Time

A practice card

Not a single leap. A step small enough to do on a bad day, repeated consistently, tends to move things further than one ambitious attempt that gets abandoned after a few tries.

When
When a goal keeps getting set at a size that only survives a good day, and quietly drops the moment life gets in the way.
What's actually happening
A step sized for your best day usually fails on an ordinary one, and a string of failed attempts tends to erode the will to keep trying more than the missed step itself does. Shrinking the step until it survives a bad day keeps the habit alive through the ordinary stretches, and small steps repeated over time tend to compound into something a single big attempt rarely sustains.
What to change
Take whatever step you were planning and cut it down until it feels almost too easy to skip.
Trust that small steps add up over weeks even when day to day nothing seems to be changing.
When the step starts feeling easy, let it grow on its own instead of deliberately making it bigger too soon.
Link the tiny step to something you already do daily, right after it, so it doesn't need to be remembered separately.
On the days you least feel like it, do the tiny version anyway — that's the day the habit is actually being built.

Pick one
Five at once is how these lists fail. Tap a number — the ones up and to the left give the most for the least.
What to expect
This won't feel like much some weeks; the size is the point, not a flaw in it. Pick one step, shrink it until a bad day can't stop it, and repeat it daily for two weeks before judging whether it's grown into something bigger on its own.
choose one, and the fortnight starts
