How to Use the Emotion Wheel

A practice card

Not a mood ring. An emotion wheel is a map from a broad feeling — mad, sad, glad, scared — outward to more specific words, which tends to make the feeling easier to work with.

When
When 'fine' or 'bad' is the only word available for a feeling, and it's not clear what's actually underneath either one.
What's actually happening
Vague words like 'fine' or 'bad' give nothing to work with, since comfort, relief, and pride can all get filed under the same flat label. A wheel starts from a small set of broad categories and branches outward to more precise words for each, which tends to make a feeling easier to name accurately. More precise naming is commonly linked to feeling more in control of the emotion, not less.
What to change
Pick whichever broad category feels closest right now — mad, sad, glad, scared, or another core one — before narrowing anything.
Name the feeling out loud or write it down, rather than leaving the word only half-formed in your head.
From that broad category, follow the wheel outward and try on two or three more specific words for size.
Settle on the single word that fits best, even if none of them feels exactly right — closest is enough.
Use the wheel a few times a day, not only in hard moments, so naming becomes a familiar habit rather than a rescue.

Pick one
Five at once is how these lists fail. Tap a number — the ones up and to the left give the most for the least.
What to expect
The wheel doesn't decide what you feel — it just gives you more words to find it with. Pick one of these habits and use the wheel deliberately for two weeks, then notice whether naming a feeling has gotten any quicker.
