Locus of Control

A practice card

Where you tend to place the reason for what happens — in your own actions, or outside them, in luck and circumstance. Most people lean one way without noticing.

When
When you've noticed a pattern of either taking all the blame or none of it, for things that go wrong.
What's actually happening
The lean shows up in small language — "I got lucky" versus "I made that happen" — before it shows up as a belief you'd state outright. Which explanation gets reached for shapes whether a setback prompts another attempt or a shrug, which is why the habit is worth noticing before deciding whether to change it.
What to change
Notice whether you explain a result as something you did or something that just happened to you.
Pick something you've assumed is out of your hands and try one small action inside it, just to see.
After trying something, judge the effort you actually made separately from whether the result landed.
When you catch yourself saying "there's nothing I can do," pause and check if that's fully true.
Notice how your sense of control changes between an area that's going well and one that isn't.

Pick one
Five at once is how these lists fail. Tap a number — the ones up and to the left give the most for the least.
What to expect
This isn't about becoming someone who believes everything is up to them — some things genuinely aren't. Pick one of these and use it on purpose for two weeks, then see whether the habit of explaining has moved.
