The last watch of the dark, kept awake on purpose — the Sikh practice of rising before dawn to remember.
When
Before daybreak. The Sikh code of conduct defines it as the three hours before dawn.
How
Wake, and leave the phone where it is. Wash, and sit where you can see a window. Keep your attention on one thing — a word, the breath, the coming light. When the mind wanders, bring it back without comment. Stay until the sky starts to change.
Try it
Nothing you type is kept. It floats off the page.
Where it comes from
Sikh practice. Amrit vela means the ambrosial hours: a Sikh rises, bathes and remembers the Name, before the day's own prayers begin. No verse is given here — those belong to the tradition.
The day begins from something, not a screen.
If you'd like to see it kept, a gurdwara is open before dawn, and no one will ask you anything.
