Journaling

A practice card

Not a diary and not therapy. The specific act of putting a hard thing into words on a page, and what that act does that thinking it does not.

When
When something keeps circling in your head at the same time each day, unresolved, and talking about it hasn't made it smaller.
What's actually happening
Putting an experience into language forces it into a sequence and a cause, which is not how it sits in memory as a loose knot of feeling. Naming the feeling on paper seems to quiet the parts of the brain that fire in raw distress. In studies the effect has reached mood and even health, not only clarity.
What to change
Write down what happened in one flat sentence, without protecting anyone, including yourself. The plain version is usually the one being avoided.
Write as if it will never be read, and don't reread it for a week. An audience changes what gets written, even an audience of one.
Write about the same hard thing for fifteen minutes, four days running. This is roughly the dose the original studies used.
After a few sessions, shift from what happened to what it now means and what you'd do differently. This later step is where change tends to show.
Give yourself permission to destroy the page once it's written. Knowing it won't survive removes the audience entirely, which is often the whole obstacle.

Pick one
Five at once is how these lists fail. Tap a number — the ones up and to the left give the most for the least.
What to expect
Nothing here works from one entry. The first sessions often feel worse, not better; that is common and usually passes. Pick one form and write it for two weeks before deciding whether it does anything for you.

This is a teaching, not treatment. If you’re struggling, a doctor or therapist can help. If you’re in danger right now, call your local emergency number or a crisis line (in the US, call or text 988).
