Is Your Help Actually Helping?

A practice card

Not all help helps. Sometimes helping someone who's struggling is really about settling your own discomfort with watching them struggle, and that's a different aim.

When
When you've stepped in to help someone you care about, and it's unclear afterward whether it actually helped them.
What's actually happening
Watching someone you care about struggle is uncomfortable to sit with, and stepping in to fix it can relieve that discomfort quickly, for the helper, not necessarily for the person struggling. Some help genuinely supports someone; other help removes a difficulty they needed to move through, or sends the message they can't be trusted to handle it. The two can look identical from outside while doing different things.
What to change
Before stepping in, ask honestly whether the urge to help is for their sake or to settle your own discomfort.
Ask what kind of help they actually want, rather than deciding for them what they need.
Wait a moment before jumping in, and let them attempt it first, even if it's slower or messier.
Offer to help with one specific piece, rather than taking the whole problem out of their hands.
Notice when watching them struggle is raising your own anxiety, separate from anything going wrong for them.

Pick one
Five at once is how these lists fail. Tap a number — the ones up and to the left give the most for the least.
What to expect
This isn't about helping less; it's checking what the help actually does. If they might be in danger, act now: call your local emergency number or a crisis line. Otherwise pick one of these and try it for two weeks before judging how your help lands.

This is a teaching, not treatment. If you’re struggling, a doctor or therapist can help. If you’re in danger right now, call your local emergency number or a crisis line (in the US, call or text 988).
