Pairing Safe Triggers

A practice card

Not exposure alone. Pairing a safe but anxiety-triggering cue with a calm body, gradually and repeatedly, tends to teach the trigger to stop reading as danger.

When
When something safe still triggers a strong reaction, and simply waiting for the reaction to fade hasn't moved it much.
What's actually happening
A trigger and a fear response got linked at some point, often outside conscious memory of how. Meeting the same trigger, at low intensity, while the body stays deliberately calm, is thought to give the nervous system a new pairing to weigh alongside the old one. Repeating it, and building up the intensity slowly, tends to matter more than any single encounter.
What to change
List versions of the trigger from mildest to strongest, so you have a ladder rather than one big step.
Before meeting the mildest version, slow your breathing and relax your shoulders until the body reads as calm.
Stay with the mild trigger while keeping the body calm, rather than leaving the moment the reaction starts.
Return to the same step more than once, and move up the ladder only once it feels ordinary.
Notice when a step stops producing much of a reaction at all, since that's the sign it's ready to move up.

Pick one
Five at once is how these lists fail. Tap a number — the ones up and to the left give the most for the least.
What to expect
This moves gradually, over repeated pairings, not one sitting. Where a trigger is intense or tied to something traumatic, do this with a therapist rather than alone. Otherwise, build the ladder, pick its lowest step, and hold that pairing for two weeks before moving up.
choose one, and the fortnight starts

This is a teaching, not treatment. If you’re struggling, a doctor or therapist can help. If you’re in danger right now, call your local emergency number or a crisis line (in the US, call or text 988).
