Drawing a Calm Image

A practice card

Putting a calm or safe image on paper by hand, not for how it looks, but for what making it does while you're making it.

When
When words feel like too much work, but sitting with a feeling untouched doesn't feel possible either.
What's actually happening
Drawing gives the hands and eyes a concrete task, which tends to compete with a spiraling mind more than sitting still does. The result doesn't need to be good, or even recognizable — it's the making, not the image, that's doing the work.
What to change
Let your hand move without deciding on a picture first — scribbles and shapes count.
Picture somewhere calm or safe, and put it on paper however it comes out.
Skip images entirely and fill space with colors that match how you want to feel.
Use a small piece of paper, or a corner of a page, so there's no pressure to fill it.
Draw the feeling as shape, line, and color, rather than a scene or an object.

Pick one
Five at once is how these lists fail. Tap a number — the ones up and to the left give the most for the least.
What to expect
The finished image isn't the point, and no drawing skill is needed for this to work. Pick one version and try it for two weeks, on paper you don't mind looking rough.
choose one, and the fortnight starts
