A Safe Place

A practice card

Imagining a calm, safe place in enough detail that some of its calm follows you back.

When
When you want somewhere steady to return to, in your mind, for a few quiet minutes.
How
Picture a place, real or imagined, where you feel entirely at ease. Fill in the detail slowly: what you'd see, hear, and feel underfoot there. Stay with it a while, adding detail rather than rushing through it.
Try it
Nothing you type is kept. It floats off the page.
If nowhere feels safe
If no place feels truly safe, or this stirs up hard memories, picture a neutral place instead — a quiet room, an ordinary street — or stop. This is a skill often practiced with a therapist first.
In a real crisis
If you're in danger or thinking of harming yourself, contact your local emergency number or a crisis line.
A place that's only ever yours.

This is a teaching, not treatment. If you’re struggling, a doctor or therapist can help. If you’re in danger right now, call your local emergency number or a crisis line (in the US, call or text 988).
