Exercise and the Brain

A practice card

Not about fitness or weight. The specific, well-established link between moving the body and how the brain works — mood, memory, and the ability to think clearly.

When
When the day has been sitting, thinking, and stuck, and more thinking hasn't loosened it.
What's actually happening
Moving the body raises a protein called BDNF, which helps neurons grow new connections, particularly in the areas tied to memory. It also increases blood flow to the brain and shifts the same stress chemicals that flood it under pressure. None of this needs to be intense — the change shows up well before exhaustion does.
What to change
Walk for ten minutes before deciding whether you have time to exercise. The decision is easier after the body has already started moving.
Stop treating a short walk as not real exercise. The brain effects track with regular movement, not with how hard a single session was.
Do the hardest thinking work after a walk, not before one. The lift to focus comes quickly and lasts a while afterward.
Aim for something that raises your heart rate for twenty minutes most days. This is the rough dose behind most of the research, not a hard floor.
Add some resistance work, not only walking or running. Strength training has its own, separate effect on mood and cognitive sharpness.

Pick one
Five at once is how these lists fail. Tap a number — the ones up and to the left give the most for the least.
What to expect
The brain effects are gradual, built over weeks of regular movement rather than any one session. Pick one form of movement and hold it for two weeks before judging whether your thinking or mood has actually changed.
