Softening the Eyes

A practice card

Letting your gaze go soft and wide instead of sharp and narrow, so you notice what's at the edges of your vision, not just what's ahead.

When
When your focus feels tunnel-narrow — locked on a screen, scanning for trouble, or replaying one thought.
At the edges
4 colors at the edges
3 shapes at the edges
2 small movements nearby
Keep your head still. Let your eyes stay soft and wide.
Why it works
A narrow, fixed gaze often goes with a narrowed, alert mind; it's part of how attention tightens under stress. Deliberately widening what you take in, without hunting for anything in particular, tends to go along with a body that's less braced.
Wide eyes, wide world.
You can do this anywhere, eyes open, without anyone noticing — walking, waiting, mid-conversation.

This is a teaching, not treatment. If you’re struggling, a doctor or therapist can help. If you’re in danger right now, call your local emergency number or a crisis line (in the US, call or text 988).
