Unconditional Positive Regard

A practice card

Not approval of every action. Carl Rogers described it as offering someone steady acceptance as a person, whatever they're going through, separate from judging what they do.

When
When someone's behavior is hard to like, and the pull is to withhold warmth until they improve.
What's actually happening
Rogers, a therapist, held that people change more easily when they feel accepted as they are, not conditional on approval — judgment tends to make someone defend or hide, which blocks the honesty change needs. Positive regard isn't agreement with everything someone does; it's separating the person's worth from any single choice, so what's actually happening can be looked at honestly instead of defended.
What to change
When someone's behavior is hard to like, say so plainly without withdrawing warmth from them as a person.
Notice when warmth toward someone feels conditional on their improving, and offer it before any change shows up.
Say plainly what's hard about a choice they made, without folding that judgment into how you treat them overall.
Keep showing up with the same steadiness during a stretch where someone is at their least likeable.
Offer yourself the same acceptance you're trying to offer someone else, especially after a choice you regret.

Pick one
Five at once is how these lists fail. Tap a number — the ones up and to the left give the most for the least.
What to expect
This isn't about approving of everything someone does — it's staying steady as a person while judging the action honestly. Pick one of these and hold it for two weeks, especially through a moment where warmth would be easy to withdraw.
