What Is Grounding

A practice card

Grounding is bringing attention back to the present, through the body and senses, when the mind has gone somewhere else — a memory, a spiral, a worry about what hasn't happened yet.

When
When your attention has drifted somewhere else entirely and you want a way back to the room you're actually in.
What's actually happening
The mind can go anywhere — back to a memory, forward to a worry — but the body is always here, in this exact moment. Grounding works by giving attention something immediate and physical to land on, which tends to be quicker than trying to think your way calm.
What to change
Push your feet into the floor and notice the actual pressure, rather than just picturing yourself doing it.
Hold a cold object — a cold glass of water — and notice the sensation until it's the only thing there.
Say out loud what's actually in the room around you — the color of the wall, the chair, the light.
Stand up, stretch, or walk a few steps, noticing the movement itself rather than where your mind wants to go.
Say today's date, the day of the week, and where you are, out loud or in your head.

Pick one
Five at once is how these lists fail. Tap a number — the ones up and to the left give the most for the least.
What to expect
Grounding doesn't resolve whatever pulled your attention away — it just brings you back to now, which is sometimes enough to think clearly about the rest. Pick one of these and use it on purpose for two weeks.
