Neuroplasticity

A practice card

Not fixed after childhood. The brain's connections keep changing in response to what gets repeated, at any age — strengthened by use, weakened by disuse.

When
When a reaction or thought pattern feels like a fixed trait rather than something that formed and could re-form.
What's actually happening
Connections between neurons strengthen when they're used repeatedly and weaken when they aren't — the basic mechanism behind learning anything, including a habit of thought. A single instance of a new pattern rarely holds on its own; it's the repetition that does the strengthening. This is slow and incremental, not a switch that flips.
What to change
Deliberately think or do the new pattern more than once. A single instance rarely holds; repetition is what strengthens it.
Practice the new pattern across several days rather than all in one sitting. Spaced repetition tends to hold better than one long session.
Get enough sleep on days you're practicing something new. A lot of that day's change appears to get consolidated overnight.
Do the new pattern with attention rather than on autopilot. How closely it's attended to seems to matter for how strongly it holds.
Notice that the old, familiar reaction stays the easiest one for a while. That's how strengthened connections work, not a sign nothing's changing.

roughly placed · repetition spaced over days does the most

Pick one
Five at once is how these lists fail. Tap a number — the ones up and to the left give the most for the least.
What to expect
This kind of change builds over weeks of repeated practice, not one strong attempt. Pick one form of repetition and hold it for two weeks before judging whether the new pattern feels any more automatic.
choose one, and the fortnight starts
