As the tradition tells it: kundalini lies coiled at the base of the spine, and rises center by center toward the crown, each stage said to open as she passes through.

How to read it

This maps the rising as the tradition describes it, not a way to bring it about. Kundalini yoga holds this as work for a qualified teacher, not a solo practice. Intense or frightening experiences deserve care from a doctor.

Root

Muladhara · “root support”

She is said to sleep here.

Here, texts say, kundalini lies coiled three and a half times, asleep, at the base of the spine. The rising is said to begin the moment she stirs and lifts from this first seat.

Sacral

Svadhisthana · “one's own seat”

She climbs into feeling and flow.

Rising past the root, kundalini is said to enter the centre of fluid and desire. Here the ascent is described as less a straight climb than a current finding its shape, the way water does.

Solar plexus

Manipura · “city of jewels”

She rises as fire and will.

At the navel's fire centre, the rising is said to gather force — kundalini no longer only stirring but climbing with heat, the way a will hardens once it has decided something for itself.

Heart

Anahata · “unstruck”

She crosses into the unstruck sound.

Kundalini is said to reach the midpoint here, three centres below her and three still above — the rising crossing, at the heart, from what is personal into what the tradition calls unstruck and unconditioned.

Throat

Vishuddha · “purification”

She rises into pure open space.

Passing the throat, the ascent is described as entering pure space — the element with no boundary. Kundalini's climb here is said to loosen what has been held unsaid, the way space makes room for a voice.

Brow

Ajna · “command”

She sees past both currents.

Here the two subtler channels that wind beside the spine are said to converge, resolved into one — and kundalini's rising is described as passing into a seeing that no longer depends on the eyes.

Crown

Sahasrara · “thousand-petalled”

She arrives, and the climb ends.

At the crown, texts describe kundalini's rising as complete — not one more centre opened but union itself, the energy that climbed now said to merge with what the whole ascent was always moving toward.
