Holding a Boundary

A field guide

The sentence gets said once. Holding it through weeks of testing — the same words, calmly repeated — is the harder, quieter part.

What’s happening?
1 of 3

When

They push back hard the first week

Try saying

Instead of

Re-arguing the whole case again from scratch.

Because

The first pushback usually tests whether the new line holds, not whether it's fair.
2 of 3

When

You're tempted to make an exception just this once

Try saying

Instead of

Bending it quietly and hoping no one notices the reset.

Because

One exception tends to reset what the other person expects from every time after.
3 of 3

When

Holding the line might provoke something unsafe

Try saying

Instead of

Holding it alone if you're not sure it's safe to.

Because

If holding this could put you in danger, get support first — your local emergency number or a crisis line if it comes to that.
Held quietly does more than defended loudly.
Setting it was the easy part. Holding it — the same words, calmly, every time — is what actually makes it real.

This is a teaching, not treatment. If you’re struggling, a doctor or therapist can help. If you’re in danger right now, call your local emergency number or a crisis line (in the US, call or text 988).
