Reflecting Back What You Heard

A field guide

What to say when you want to show someone you actually heard them, not just nodded along.

What’s happening?
1 of 3

When

They just told you something and you want to show you heard

Try saying

Instead of

Nodding along without saying anything back.

Because

Repeating the facts and the feeling shows you were actually tracking what they said, not just present.

When

You're not sure your reflection landed right

Try saying

Instead of

Assuming your first guess was correct and moving on.

Because

Your reflection is a guess, and only they know whether it landed; checking hands the correction back to them.

When

You catch yourself just repeating their exact words

Try saying

Instead of

Parroting their exact sentence back word for word.

Because

Your own words show you processed what they said; a copy can sound hollow even when it's accurate.
Checking beats assuming, every time.
Reflecting back isn't a technique to master perfectly. It's just checking before you move on.

This is a teaching, not treatment. If you’re struggling, a doctor or therapist can help. If you’re in danger right now, call your local emergency number or a crisis line (in the US, call or text 988).
