Empathic Listening

A field guide

Sometimes the kindest thing isn't a fix — it's staying with someone in a feeling, long enough for them to feel less alone in it.

What’s happening?
1 of 3

When

They're upset and you feel the urge to fix it

Try saying

Instead of

Jumping straight to “have you tried—”

Because

Understanding usually needs to come before any fix, or the fix lands as a dismissal.
2 of 3

When

Their reaction seems bigger than the situation

Try saying

Instead of

Thinking “isn't that a bit much?” instead of asking.

Because

A feeling that looks disproportionate from outside usually makes sense from where they're standing.
3 of 3

When

You want to share your own similar story

Try saying

Instead of

Turning the conversation toward your own version of it.

Because

Your story can wait. Right now the room belongs to theirs.
Be with it. Don't move it along.
You don't need the right words to listen well. You need to actually be there while they feel what they feel.

This is a teaching, not treatment. If you’re struggling, a doctor or therapist can help. If you’re in danger right now, call your local emergency number or a crisis line (in the US, call or text 988).
