Being Right vs Being Helpful

A field guide, for the one helping

Winning a point and helping someone aren't the same move. Being right is a fact about the world. Being helpful is a fact about the person in front of you.

What’s happening?
1 of 3 · facing them

When

They get a detail wrong and you feel the urge

Do

Ask yourself if the correction actually helps them now.
Say that sounds hard before anything else.
Let the small detail go if it doesn't matter.

To them it may feel

Unheard, if what they get back is a correction instead of company.

Because

Being technically right rarely comforts someone who just needed to be heard.
2 of 3 · still fighting

When

You're still replaying an old disagreement in your head

Do

Notice the pull to win is about your comfort, not their need.
Ask what actually matters here, a year from now.
Let the disagreement stay unsettled if it can.

To them it may feel

Unaware, often, that the old argument is still running in you.

Because

Not every disagreement needs a winner, and peace can matter more than being right.
3 of 3 · facing it

When

Something they've got wrong could actually cause harm

Do

Speak up plainly this time — it's worth the friction.
Explain briefly why it matters.
Offer to help fix it together.

To them it may feel

Relieved the correction came from care, not from scorekeeping.

Because

Some facts change outcomes — medication, money, safety — and those are worth saying.
The correction can wait. They often can't.
Most moments don't need a winner. They need someone who stayed.

This is a teaching, not treatment. If you’re struggling, a doctor or therapist can help. If you’re in danger right now, call your local emergency number or a crisis line (in the US, call or text 988).
